FOREWORD.
The publication Keys to Soil Taxonomy for Uruguay is an abbreviated version of the ninth edition ofthe Keys to Soi/ Taxonomy (2003). lt provides the taxonomic keys necessary for
classification of the soils in Uruguay in a form that can be easily used in the fiel d. Only those diagnostic horizons, soil properties, and taxa applicable to the soils ofUruguay are included in the publication. Including only the relevant taxa makes the keys more user-friendly. Determination of the taxa that occur or are likely to occur in Uruguay is based on current knowledge ofthe soils and landscapes, published data, and pedons that have been described and sampled in the country. Sorne taxa that may occur in the country are not included because information about them is incomplete. In chapters 4 through 11 (the classification keys) , each taxa is identified by an alphabetic code denoting its place in the system. For example, the subgroup Mol/ic Albaqualfs is identified by the code JAHH. These codes are reproduced in the same form as they appear in the ninth edition ofthe Keys to Soi/ Taxonomy. Breaks in the alphabetic sequence indicate that taxa have been omitted because they are not known to occur in Uruguay. This publication can help the people ofUruguay to understand their soil resources so that they can manage the soils effectively and make wise land use decisions. As the intemational language of soil scientists, soil taxonomy helps us to understand, describe, and interpret soils and to communicate our discoveries about them to others.
